On our recent trip to Costa Rica, I filmed this Bare-throated Tiger Heron. Gorgeous though he is, he can look like a cross-eyed Keith Richards. And the poor fella looks like someone shoved a funnel, narrow end first, into his throat.
We’ve all heard of child abuse, but are these Green Heron juveniles guilty of parental abuse? They deserve a good spanking.

Any Green Heron ever born could put a karate master to shame. They have perfect balance and, like all predators, they wait, frozen, for prey. These wading birds are only about 18 inches tall, but skill and speed, not size, enables them to snap fish out of a pond.

Green Herons have clodhoppers for feet. But strong, graceful clodhoppers. You’d accept size twenty shoes too if you could be that surefooted.
