Hummingbirds can zip off in every direction at once–because they weigh only as much as a dime and they beat their wings 80 times a SECOND!

Mississippi Kite Harassed by Jays

Blue Jays buzz around a Mississippi Kite, bedeviling him. Sooner or later the Kite will get a painful peck on the head unless he leaves.

Of Voyeurism and Great Horned Owls Mating

I didn’t have any idea the owls were about to mate, not until the male dropped into my shot and landed on top of the female. Honest. If I had, I would have averted my eyes and turned off the record button. Aren’t you glad I didn’t, though, because now you can watch too.

Any Green Heron ever born could put a karate master to shame. They have perfect balance and, like all predators, they wait, frozen, for prey. These wading birds are only about 18 inches tall, but skill and speed, not size, enables them to snap fish out of a pond.
